Gifts
Please do not bring gifts for the children here (as recommended in some guidebooks). It is much better to make a donation to a reputable charity before you leave, so that you can be sure that your generosity will have the best possible impact. You could do worse than giving money to the Fistula Hospital, Marie Stopes International, or to Save the Children.
If you have room in your luggage, please do bring old books or shoes that you can leave behind. We will arrange for these to reach people who need them.
You do not need to bring gifts for Owen & Grethe. If you feel unable to visit without bringing a little something, however, here are some things that we cannot easily get in Ehiopia and which are always welcome:
- Herbal tea (without green or black tea) – licorice or mint if possible
- Unsweetened Wholewheat Muesli (eg Sainsbury’s)
- Branston pickle, Coleman’s English Mustard, Heinz Baked Beans etc
We may also ask you to bring running shoes for which we will, of course, gladly pay.
