According to this BBC report, the Government is to back down over the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Bill, which would have given ministers the power to alter legislation without the approval of Parliament.

If so this is perhaps the first scalp for UK bloggers, who I believe first identified the dangers of this Bill, analysis which was subsequently picked up in the mainstream media.

And it is good news for parliamentary democracy.

I think that would be thee and me then. Do we get the MBE or something for this?

Not sure. We did keep the pressure on, but I suspect the amendments are in line with the recommendations of the report of the Regulatory Reform Select Committee (PDF), which was published on the 6th of Feb – i.e. at the same time as the draft Bill itself.

I am not sure that this is a victory guys, but if there are any MBE’s going, I seem to have been the first to blog about it.

Cheers Phil.  Believe it or not, there were MPs, peers and others deeply worried about the effect of the Bill well before the blogocracy and, eventually, the MSM got hold of the story.  The Regulatory Reform Committee polices the present reg reform process and appears to have been deeply unhappy at the way the Govt was going about reviewing the existing law.
